biography

Born June 27th, 1950, Coni Minneci grew up in a typical suburban neighborhood in Western New York.

A passion for art started at the age of ten. The enjoyment of drawing began to blossom. This passion has never left her. After receiving a B.A. in Graphic Design (1973) from Buffalo State College, Minneci worked in Advertising as a freelance illustrator while raising her family. Work included architectural renderings, commercial ad illustrations and commercial needlepoint design.

In the mid 1990’s, she returned to fine art painting in oil and acrylic, studying with Joseph McGurl, John Yerger, Hongnian Zhang, and Roberta Remy. Gaining knowledge in technical skills and concepts, Minneci worked attaining another Degree: B.A. in Studio Arts, Concentration in Painting from SUNY Empire College.

Coni has served on the Board of the Carnegie Art Center in North Tonawanda, and served as President of the Buffalo Society of Artists for the years 2005 and 2006. She also served on the Art Selection Committee for the Women and Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, New York. Other work includes teaching Hudson River School Landscape and Plein-Air painting, as well as lecturing, giving demonstrations and judging area art competitions.

Collected locally and nationally, her work is available at various galleries in Western New York. Tom McCabe and Jeff Halloway are her artist agents.

artist's statement

My imagination combines the experience of time, place and atmosphere to create art rooted in the Hudson River School that takes new directions. Painting in oil or acrylic, I desire each piece to be its own dance.

My art allows me to breathe easy and create my own realities and have control over a brief interlude of existence. My subject matter varies, from pure eye candy to feminist expressionism often with surrealistic and futuristic influences.

At age ten, I began to escape into my own world, drawing and imagining. I was happy in my quiet corner.

As a young teenage artist I would study John Constable and Winslow Homer imaging what it would have been like to be them. Now my inspiration comes from women artists, many who are just now gaining recognition. Remedios Varo gives me courage to listen to my inner voice. Dorothy Simpson Krause provides inspiration to experiment with mediums.

Relying on my unconscious subliminal impulses to guide me I often ignore other contemporary influences in order to keep my creative world my personal sanctuary. My mind stays free to explore and the results which are visual pleasures, completing me. My skyscapes are linked to my dreams. Flying dreams which run in my family gave me much pleasure, not linked to escaping enemies, but pure enjoyment. Everyday, I must see the sky, it releases my anxiety and is a meditative experience.

I wish my viewers to experience my visual creations as an escape from the stressfull times they live in, and receive inspiration for their own journeys in their lives.
